Hattie W. Caraway : Some Special Properties
Title:
Chinese Lacquer Jewelry Box
Description:
A red wood Chinese Lacquer Jewelry Box with a flat black base, decorated with floral motifs on all sides, and a high relief Chinese legendary scene on the top. The latter scene is depicted in a natural landscape in front of a classical Chinese-style facility. Five people in traditional customs are engaged in conversation.
Background:
A letter from Lou Jones to Frank and Roberta Sloan, dated 1 April, 2005, written after the funeral service for her husband, Jeff Jones, states, "In his will he wanted this Chinese lacquer box, which Forrest Caraway had brought to his mother, and which she had given to Jeff, returned to her memorial at Arkansas State. Could you do that for me?"

A subsequent formal note states, "Chinese Lacquer Box. From Forrest Caraway to his mother Hattie Wyatt Caraway. Given to her great nephew J. Jefferson Jones. It is returned to her memorial room 6 January 2005."
